SPLICING LATHE BELTING

SPLICING WATCHMAKER’S LATHE BELTS

LATHE BELTING THAT YOU FIND NOW CAN BE SPLICED BY SIMPLE METHODS. FIRST YOU WILL NEED A HEAT SOURCE, SUCH AS A CANDLE, CIGARETTE LIGHTER OR ANY OTHER SUCH HEAT SOURCE. YOU MUST ALSO HAVE SOMETHING TO CUT THE BELTING WITH: WIRE CUTTERS OR EXACTO KNIFE WORK WELL.

Step 1: Cut the belt to the length that you need, keeping in mind that the clear and orange belting stretches a little and the green belting stretches very little. Place the belt around both pulleys (lathe and motor) and make your cut to length with care.

Step 2: Leave the belt around the lathe head pulley before beginning to heat you wont be able to put it around after it is spliced without taking the lathe head apart.

Step 3: Heat the ends of the belting till they are melted and a ball or mushroom forms on the ends.

Step 4: Push the molten ends together, paying close attention to alignment. If they are flaming blow out the flame and hold the ends together until they are completely cool. DON'T GET IN A HURRY!!! This step usually takes a couple of minutes. Trim off excess around the melted joint, be careful, I use a small set of wire cutters!
